GOOD TRAITS
- Intelligent. Maybe it’s the fact she knows three languages fluently. Or that she goes through books like a starving man seeing a buffet. Any way you spin it, Kyle’s a smart girl. She can recall random facts she saw in a magazine somewhere, and actually stays awake and listens with interest in History of Magic. Knowledge is very important to her. She wants to know all about everything, so no matter the subject you’ll find her reading about it. If you want a study partner, or someone to discuss something with, she’s the person to do it with. Academics are her love, and learning new things are one of the things that make her happiest. She loves people that will debate with her, and teach her things that she didn’t know. It’s almost childlike, the enthusiasm that she has for it. Add this to the fact that she was raised to be formally respectful toward professors of any kind, she can come off as the biggest teacher’s pet that ever walked the earth.
- Adventurous. Just because she likes to curl up and read doesn’t mean she doesn’t like danger every now and again. She loves to explore, and find all the nooks and crannies in places, particularly Hogwarts. It’s a neverending puzzle, and it’s an enormous amount of fun for her, going down all the corridors and opening up all the doors, discovering secret passageways, and discovering interesting things on the walls and in rooms. She never really got to explore by herself back home in Egypt, so she takes every advantage of it in England. From two and a half summers, Kyle could practically be a tour guide for London. She loves the city, Muggle and Wizarding. She crawled all over it, memorizing the streets, stores, and people. If a bit reserved, she is a friendly girl, and many of the private store-owners like her politeness and curiousity. A few of them know her by name at this point, from her countless treks through the concrete jungle, and a couple are on an actual friend-basis.
- Compassionate. Kyle loves people. All of them. Any age, any personality. And she understands them. She likes to just sit and listen to people talk, and to learn about what their lives are like and what their loves in life are. It’s a different form of knowledge, but one that’s just as important to her. And she likes helping people, too. Kyle really doesn’t judge anyone. She feels everyone has their own perspective, and to judge is to feel that your own perspective is better. And who says it is? Even if people are mean to her, she thinks they must have their reasons and continues on her way anyway. Sometimes she is almost too nonjudgmental, but it doesn’t bother her. Kyle thinks with absolute certainty that everyone has a good side, even if its buried down deep and you need an extra-long shovel to find it. She’s also the type of person who’s up to that task, even if she gets hurt along the way.
- Reserved. As much as Kyle adores listening to others, it’s a rare thing for her to talk about herself. She likes to keep that part of herself hidden. She believes people will judge her for it, which is part of the reason she’s so staunchly nonjudgmental. She wishes people would see her, and not the stereotypes that surround her or the history that still affects her. Nonetheless, people will talk about her anyway, anything from her declared religion, to what her past might be, anything they can get their hands on. Kyle tries to not let it affect her, but she figures if she can keep parts of herself secret, they can’t find anything to pick at. On the more helpful side, even if she can be quiet, it’s a soft kind of quiet. The kind where you can just sit with her for hours without saying a word, and it never gets awkward. She has a very soothing presence.
- Sharing of knowledge. Kyle’s not the type to keep things she’s learned to herself. She wants to be a writer, so that she can talk about all the people she’s met and how their lives differ, yet they all survive in their own way. She would like to talk about her childhood in Egypt, even if she doesn’t quite have the courage for that yet. Honestly, she just wants to improve the world. Sharing her experiences with people and places would make her immensely happy, especially if whoever she was talking to appreciated it just as much as she did. Her eyes light up and she changes from the kind listener to the effervescent scholar, bubbling out anything you want to know for the sheer sake of sharing. She loves it when people are just as curious about things as she is.
BAD TRAITS
- Weak. Granted, Kyle can defend herself just fine and has certainly got a voice of her own, sometimes she’s just easy to pull down. She’ll take anything people throw at her, and actually believe it’s true. She really can’t help it. It’s a self-criticism that developed during her childhood and early teens, and it’s a hard habit to break. She doesn’t believe compliments and will think about insults and whether they’re true or not forever. Opinions must have a seed of truth to her, so she’ll mull it over and decide if it affects her or not. Usually, it does. She then tries to make herself better, to put herself in good graces with the people who talked about her. Kyle’s not sure why she does that, it’s just a need to feel important and liked.
- Awkward. Kyle’s definitely not awkward when she’s one on one with a person, or with a small, comfortable group. But if there’s a time the girl wishes she would disappear, it’s in a big, chaotic mass of people. She can’t stand parties, they make her feel very uncomfortable. She’s usually the person worrying about everyone else, and wishing she was at home cuddled in a blanket watching bad soap operas. Big crowds just confuse her, and she’s never sure how to act in them. Secretly, she wishes she could be charismatic enough to make everyone in spaces like these look at her, but it just doesn’t work. She prefers more intimate deals, like just hanging out with a couple people, where she’s much more outgoing and acts more like herself.
- Old habits. Raised in a strict Islam household, the habits and mannerisms she grew up using take a terribly long time to get out of her system. Out of these habits, she still prays five times a day and will fast during Ramadan, but she’s slowly breaking away from this. She also still does not consume pork, and has to remind herself that the traditional Muslim greeting isn’t received as well in England. Kyle just doesn’t feel that these practices define who she is anymore, and she’s made it a personal goal to try and get rid of them. However, she doesn’t like pork anyway, so at least Allah can’t hold that against her.
- Nonjudgmental. As much as this is usually a good thing, sometimes she gives people a second chance that she shouldn’t. Kyle’s too trusting for her own good, and gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. Even an inherently evil person, who killed people for no other reason than enjoyment, she would still try to see it from their perspective and find the good. Someday this might get her hurt or killed, and she doesn’t see the danger in trying to dig the good out of ninety-eight percent evil people.
- Child-like. In some ways, Kyle has overwhelming naivete. She refuses to let herself see the bad in the world, and nobody’s sure if it’s a defense mechanism or just how she really thinks. She sees a simpler world, and will tell you straight what she sees. Kyle goes past shields and facades, to see the heart of things. Growing up with a sense of always thinking before she talks, it’s the only habit she’s managed to throw out the window. She figures honesty is a better policy, and if people don’t like it, they can find someone else to lie to them.
LIKES
- Akhet.
Her cat is pretty much her baby. She loves him to death. - People.
Anyone. - Belly-dancing.
It’s stereotypical, but she can do it. Her mother taught her when she was young – and it’s a very good way to keep your abs in shape. - Egypt.
She really, really misses it. - Exploring.
What’s more fun than that? - Chinese food.
She’d never had it until she moved to London, and she’s loved it ever since. - Orange.
It’s her favorite color. She loves wearing the color, too. You’ll often find her in an orange tank top or t-shirt. - Arabic.
She knows English, French, and Arabic. English is the most useful now, but her birth language still has her heart. - Sand.
She loves to dig her toes into it. - London.
It’s like one big maze, ready to be solved. - Books.
Books are food and water to her, and probably more important. - Crossword puzzles.
They test her random trivia, and even when she doesn’t know one, she has fun looking it up. - Classical music.
She just loves it. - Photography.
Another way to remind herself of what she's seen in the future.
DISLIKES
- England’s weather.
Where the hell is the sun? - Her looks.
She sticks out like a sore thumb in England. - English food.
It’s so bland. - Pork.
It’s against her religion, and she just plain doesn’t like the taste, either. - Parties/Crowded places.
They confuse her, and make her extremely uncomfortable. - Being restricted.
She had way too much of that in the past. - Death Metal.
She doesn’t like feeling like she’s being yelled at. - Planes.
She's only been in one once, and it scared the bejesus out of her. She did like the airport itself, though. - The metro.
Claustrophobic reasons. She walks everywhere, unless she really has to, she refuses to get on it. - Coconuts.
She's mildly allergic. - The school cloaks.
They get in the way of everything.
SECRETS
- Her past.
Not in the melodramatic, obsessive kind of way. Kyle just doesn’t like talking to other people about herself, especially Egypt. She’s met people who don’t understand the beauty, so she keeps her love of her home to herself. It’s her own little escapist world. She keeps her father, secret, too. As far as anyone knows, her mother has always been divorced, and she simply moved from Egypt because England offered better opportunities. Kyle doesn’t even know why she keeps that to herself. Secretly, she’s kind of ashamed of it in a way. - Her diary.
Not so much the diary itself, but the fact the whole thing is written in Arabic. Her language keeps her other secrets just in case. She’s gone through a lot of diaries, mostly because she also gets side-tracked and uses them as notebooks to write down what she wants to remember for her writing later on. - Her writing itself.
She’s very self-conscious about it. Kyle thinks that no one will like it, or appreciate the things she’s gathered like she does. She keeps putting off actually sitting down and writing a cohesive book for this reason. She’s shy about it, which is why it’s written in Arabic. People will hate her for documenting them, she just knows it. So Kyle’s reluctant to even tell people what her ideas are, because they’ll just laugh at her.
HABITS
- Cursing in Arabic.
Kyle’s not fond of cursing, so when she does, it slips out in her native tongue. Afterward she turns bright red and usually stammers an apology, depending on who she’s talking to. - There’s always a little notepad on her. Just in case she sees something that she absolutely needs to write down.
- Humming.
Anything from folk songs to the newest hits on the radio, she’ll be humming the tune under her breath. Particularly when she’s concentrating very hard or bored. - Twirling a strand of hair around one finger.
She usually does this when she’s off in her own little world, daydreaming, brainstorming, being nostalgic, whatever. It’s a good sign she’s not actually paying attention.
AMBITIONS
FEARS
- Being trapped inside a house again.
- Spiders.
- Stifling crowds.
- Fire, as much as she loves warmth.
- Not being allowed to read.
PATRONUS, WHY
BOGGART
AMORTENTIA
- Sand.
The girl’s from Northern Africa. Kyle grew up with sand, and she loves it. Digging her toes into it, trying to run up a sand dune, the soft waves it made as gentle breezes danced across it. She happens to find it very pretty. - Palm trees.
Again with being from a stifling hot climate. Just part of the surroundings she grew up with. - Spices.
There’s nothing like the smell of an open-market Egyptian bazaar, with its quirky sellers, providing a buyer for anything their dreams required. And Kyle associates the boisterous, fiery smell of Middle Eastern spices with it.
- Old book.
She’s a reader, and the more antique, the better. Older books just have a comforting, familiar smell that puts her at ease.
don't lose my picture ;; you'll need it again next time i know

OVERALL HISTORY
Things began to change when Kyle was almost fourteen. Nailah began taking English lessons from a British woman named Anne Kennington. She noticed her mother begin to change. Nailah started talking to her daughter more about different subjects; history outside of Egypt, the languages of French and English –transferred and helped by Anne-, anything Kyle wanted to know. She was suspicious at first, her mother had never before been truly supportive of Afrikaisi’s insatiable thirst for knowledge. Soon, she discovered the reason was Ms. Kennington, who was swiftly becoming like family to Nailah. Anne told her about her life in Britain before moving to Egypt to teach, and Nailah was amazed at the stories. At first, Kyle was shocked to learn that Anne was forty-three and still unmarried, with no intentions of doing so. That was a completely foreign concept, that caused Nailah to sit back and think about her and her daughter’s life.
A few months later, Nailah revealed to Anne the true nature of her husband and his abuse. Rather than reassure her this was normal like she had almost hoped, Anne was appalled and insisted that Nailah and Afrikaisi leave him at once. She even offered her to move back to Britain and take them with her to live in her flat until Nailah could get enough schooling for the job of her choice. Nailah was appalled, that she would even receive such an offer. That things could be different. Slowly she realized that her daughter deserved more than what was offered right now, minimal education and a marriage to a man not of her choosing. And Afrikaisi, more than anything, wanted independence.
One month after Kyle’s fifteenth birthday, Hondo grew especially violent and pushed her down the stairs. Kyle was uninjured except for a few bruises and a slightly sprained wrist, but Nailah knew it could have been worse. Her daughter could have died right then. Two days later, Hondo left to go see a friend for a few hours, and Nailah decided to run. They fled to Ms. Kennington’s flat in Cairo. Anne was relieved that Nailah had finally decided to get away, and as soon as they were able they were on a plane to England.
Afrikaisi shortened her name to Kyle, and was enrolled in Hogwarts. She loved it immediately, the big, mystical castle and rolling hills reminding her of the fairy tales she used to read secretly at home. They lived with Anne, since Nailah decided she wanted an actual degree so that she could get a good, respectful job. Kyle’s thirst for knowledge was finally being filled by all the things to learn now, some of which she hadn’t known existed. She made friends –of both sexes, which was new and exciting- and explored London both on her own and with Anne, forgetting her old life and settling into the new. [/ul]
