SELF IMAGE
GOOD TRAITS
- Gregarious: Alista easily makes friends because of her outgoing nature. It seems she just gives off a bit of ‘warmth’ that draw people in, probably resulting from her constant smile and kind eyes. She loves to surround herself with those she finds wonderful or intriguing and doesn’t hesitate when it comes to including a new stranger in a joke or a casual conversation. She’s the type of girl that loves to walk down the hallway and say hello or spout off some quip to everyone she knows and loves.
- Optimistic: Always looking for that elusive silver lining, Alista sometimes pushes her daises to the point of annoyance. Constantly smiling, joking, or laughing, it seems she can brighten almost anyone’s day. It’s a goal of hers, to go out of her way to cheer up those who are down, and usually, she’s successful. She’ll convince you that the glass is half full even if there isn’t a drop of water in it.
- Courageous: More than once in her childhood, Lis bothered her brother to join her in some ‘grand adventure’, and she always insisted she be the one to save him. Horror stories never really sacred her, and she was constantly in trouble for trying valiantly to defend the weak (i.e. baby birds, puppies, and younger children) from the dangers that confronted them (usually a fall from the nest or money-grubbing bullies. Since she has grown, she rarely turns down an occasion to dart out of school after hours or stand up for the puny fifth year Hufflepuff that’s being heckled by Slytherin’s. Daring might even be fitting, but Alista is not without fear. She has learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to confront it. She’s done this numerous times, with her visionary ability, defying everyone when they told her she could not make the Quidditch team, and during a few duels in the previous years.
- Intelligent: The Sorting Hat had a teensy bit of a debate about her Ravenclaw attendance, and it’s no surprise: both of her parents were brilliant in school, and she inherited the genes. School comes easily to her, and she doesn’t spend much time studying, but she still manages to make very good marks. (Besides that, her parents all but require it.) Even outside of the classroom, Alista is no idiot. She’s clever and knows just as much about the ‘street’ as she does about her textbooks.
- Loyal: Once you become Alista’s friend, she will stand by you through everything. Thick and thin, there is no difference to her: whether it’s a fight with another or a horrible mistake, she doesn’t care. She’s a rather good judge of character, so the friends she is closest to are wonderful in her book. No tiny little misstep or even a huge slip-up can make her loyalty waver, because she truly believes in the core of a person, and their goodness. The same goes with her family: she loves them unconditionally, and would not betray or turn her back on them for any reason.
BAD TRAITS
- Blunt: Sugar-coating is not the Alista fashion. She believes that honesty means being truly honest, sometimes even to the point of being brutal. No amount of convincing will ever change her mind, and on the rare occasion that she does soften up her replies, it is only by a small amount and in the most dire of circumstances. This also comes into play when dealing with those she is not fond of: to her, it’s pointless to put yourself into situations when you must interact with someone you don’t like, and she will make it clear that she is not enjoying herself.
- Sarcastic: This comes along with the constant joking and playful nature. Usually, it is done as a form of humor, but when she becomes frustrated or upset, Lissa will basically always default to this. It’s a sort of weapon, a way to get out of her quick responses by saying ‘I was being sarcastic.’ or ‘I was being serious!’ (It is likely, however, that no matter which aforementioned response she chooses, it was sarcasm.)
- Easily irked: Such is the life of a Longbottom girl. As previously stated, Alista is normally a happy, peaceful girl, but the smallest things can set her off. And when they do, she snaps quickly into a defensive mode, firing off sarcastic remarks or getting away from the situation as quickly as possible. Surprisingly, Alista cries a lot more than those who just see her perky, smiling face would think. Not a horrible lot, or for small incidents like paper cuts, but when she is frustrated, sad, angry, or otherwise upset. It is usually not for long periods of time, and she prefers to have no one witness it.
- Single-minded: At times, Alista gets so caught up in the moment that she does not consider the consequences. When in an argument, for example: she quickly shoots of hurtful, not really thinking about how she does not truly mean them, but just that she is upset at the moment. It also gets her into a bit of trouble with rules, as she tends to find that they were put into place to be broken. When her friends speak of sneaking out of the tower at night, she is gung-ho, scoffing when they begin to worry about being caught. She’s not someone who really thinks through situations and has gotten into trouble more than enough times for it.
LIKES
- Green tea: It’s delicious cold, which makes it perfect for the summer, and, hello, the name alone includes her favorite color.
- Laughing: She’s constantly joking, and laughter really is the best medicine to any ailment.
- Gardening: Just like her father, Lis is a sucker for plants. She has vibrant tulips in the basket outside of her dorm window, and a nice little potted cactus next to her bedside. Gardening comes naturally to her, and she’s learned all about the uses of many different types of plants (secretly hoping to discover something to cure her grandparents).
- Summer and spring: Warm, and the only real time the outdoors are ‘alive’ with color and vibrance.
- Christmas: Well, even if she hates snow and the cold, Christmas is so festive. Everyone wishing everyone else well, presents wrapped and sitting under the beautiful tree, love blossoming. It’s really very picturesque.
- Full names: Sometimes, it’s rather amusing to call someone by their full name, like ‘Lucas’ instead of ‘Luke’ or ‘Arabella’ instead of just ‘Bells’. She loves her name as well, and likes the ‘formal’ sound of full names.
- Nicknames: Of course, these are lovely as well. A favorite pastime of hers is creating nicknames for everyone she knows, those that are border-line annoying and others that fit wonderfully. (She has a plethora of her own, so it’s really no surprise.)
- Learning about her family’s past: The Longbottoms’ lives have been so exciting, and Alista wants to take it all in. When she was a child, she would pester her father for hours to tell her another story about his adventures in Hogwarts or even before, and she would listen attentively. She’s a girl who likes to know where she comes from and keeps notes of it on random slips of parchment.
- Dueling: Another not-so-lovely hobby she enjoys. She never gets into truly heated duels, but the Dueling Tournament is always a favorite event when some Snakes are asking for it, she simply must give it to them. Besides, she’s wonderful at Charms and DADA, so she has no real trouble holding her own when in a magical match-up.
- Adventures: Anything can turn into an adventure with her, whether it’s searching for a book in the library or confronting a few boisterous boys in the courtyard after dark. She feeds off of it and revels in all aspects of the adrenaline rush.
DISLIKES
- Voldemort: A seemingly easy answer for any Gryffindor, but especially for Alista. He killed her maternal grandparents when her mother was merely a child and tortured her father’s parents to insanity. As if that weren’t enough, his followers even went after her great-grandmother, and he battled her parents at the end of their Hogwarts career. She is prepared and more than ready to put her life on the line to defeat him and his followers.
- Snakes: Simply put, they’re creepy. They slide around on their stomachs and none of them have ever done anything nice for anyone. And the animal’s just as bad. (Kidding.)
- Voldemort: It’s his fault her grandparents are insane. Enough said.
- Cold weather: Nothing really grows in the winter, and it’s no fun to spend time outside freezing to death.
- Waiting: Ever-impatient, she hates knowing something is coming up and having to sit around and think about it.
- Homework on the weekends: She has better things to do.
- Blood elitists: It’s not as if you can see someone’s blood any way, and it doesn’t affect their personality at all. They’re just…stupid.
- Judgmental people: Alista likes to truly get to know people before passing judgment on them, and she hates people who simply take a glance at her last name or her house and pass her off as a clone of her father.
- Awkward situations: She likes to include everyone as much as possible, but when things are awkward, she tends to find a good reason to abort the situation.
- Dancing: Liss feels like a huge oaf when she dances, so she avoids it at all costs. Unless she’s dancing to be funny, it’s probably not going to happen.
- Ice cream: The texture has never really appealed to her. She’d rather just eat a fresh strawberry or a chocolate bar instead of a frozen version of it.
SECRETS
- Seeing: She hasn’t really told anyone, and only her family (and very close friends) know. She is training her ‘inner eye’ to become more focused and is sometimes able to use the ability when she wants to, but she knows that there is quite a bit more training to go. Her visions are still usually vague and stop before she has seen enough to truly understand the situation, but she continues to work on it.
- Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum Wrappers: Neville used to receive these from his mother when he would visit her in the infirmary, and his gran called them ‘rubbish’, but he loved them. Since Lissa has been visiting them, she’s also received them from her grandmother, as if she knows that Alista is Neville’s daughter. No one knows about them, and she keeps them in a dark green wooden box in her trunk as a reminder that they were once the loving parents of her father.
- Her father: Not in the sense that she doesn’t admit she belongs to him, but she doesn’t let on to her classmates unless their speaking poorly about him or if they ask her first. She is not ashamed by any means, but she and her father discussed it before she and Lucas went off to school and said that he wanted them to have the same Hogwarts experience he did (within reason). So, he tries to keep the ‘parent’ out of their school lives and does not interfere when it comes to disciplinary actions or schoolwork. Another reason she wants it kept a secret: she does not want her classmates to think she only gets excellent grades because of her father. In the classroom, he treats her no differently than any other students, and she treats him like any other professor. Of course, on holiday’s and whatnot, it’s been said that Neville was seen planting a kiss on the head or she giving him a present, but really, they are family.
HABITS
- Swearing: She doesn’t get into it too often, but she has been known to let a few choice words fly. She finds that it’s much easier to express how she’s truly feeling through words that actually convey her anger and not watered-down versions. (She is trying to cut back, though.)
- Whistling: It’s fun, enough said. Plus, there really aren’t enough people who whistle nowadays, and she thinks it is becoming a lost art. Her palette includes anything: show tunes, pop, opera, you name it. She doesn’t discriminate.
- Popping her gum: It’s constantly annoying the teachers of the classes she’s in, and once, when she decided to bring a bit to Defense Against the Dark Arts on a day the teacher had just spoken to her pretentious mother in law, she walked out of class with an inflated head. (The bubble went down in a matter of hours.)

They were right, however, and two years later, the children received their letters from Hogwarts. They were incredibly excited, but their mother seemed to be having a bit of ‘empty nest’ syndrome, and, since their father would be with them at Hogwarts, she felt ‘left out’. To quell this, Hannah became the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron, moving into a ‘penthouse’ above it so she could at least hang onto the fringes of the magical world. The twins went off to school, and when it came time for sorting, Alista was more than ready. She tromped up to the stool and plopped down, losing sight of the crowd before her under the musty hat.
”My my, a Longbottom I see! I remember your father: almost a Hufflepuff. But no, you would not do there, far too daring. But very intelligent too, like your parents, you would do wonderfully in Ravenclaw. Would you like that?”
Alista had begun to feel rather nervous and swallowed, shrugging her shoulders. The hat laughed.
”I don’t think it’s for you: I see the loyalty in your heart, and the chivalry. And…my, what’s this? We’ll keep that our little secret, my dear, but you must practice it. In time, you will become a marvelous ‘visionary’. Until then, I know you’ll thrive in…GRYFFINDOR!”
The red and gold table exploded into applause, and she caught the eye of her father, seated at the head table. He smiled widely at her, applauding louder than anyone else. And then, Alista grinned before turning to scamper down the few steps and find a seat amidst the salutations and claps on the back. Lucas was next, and after some debate, he was placed into the Badger. Lissa cheered loudly, whistling through her two fingers. Her father clapped just as loudly for him, beaming at his two children from his seat next to the Headmaster. The rest of the dinner commenced in joyous celebration, and Alista felt right at home with the rest of the Lions.
Her years flew by without much disturbance, since school came easily, as did friends. She was instantly ‘famous’ because of her father, but soon, became rather popular among the rest of her classmates. In her second year, to the dismay of all of her friends, she decided to try out for the Quidditch team. Chasing had always looked so enthralling, and she had practiced relentlessly for days, but no one believed she could do it. She was so scrawny, and schoolwork was her thing. She couldn’t possibly manage the Quaffle atop a broom, let alone pass and score with two others. Alista just turned up her nose and had a few shouting matches with her more stubborn friends, and when the time came to show what she had learned, she gave it her all. Admittedly, she was pretty good, but there were certainly a few that exceeded her skill. However, the captain saw something in her, her tenacity and how well her chemistry with the team was. It was for those reasons that he chose her, and Lissa walked proudly down the hallways donning her Quidditch robes on the first game of the season. Over time and with a lot of hard work, Lissa became an indispensible member of the team, leading in assists in the whole league. (She was never really that interested in the actual ‘scoring’.) She adored Quidditch and continued it throughout her six years of school, becoming quite close with the rest of the team.
Aside from Quidditch, Alista just enjoyed her life. Passing her classes, laughing with her friends in the corridors, and getting into a bit of mischief every now and then. Lucas and she remained close, and eventually, she began training her inner eye. The headmaster knew an old Seer, one Damascus Rubel, who was quite clairvoyant. He had made few public predictions in his career, but they were always incredibly accurate and he could trigger them when he wished them to appear. In order to do this, however, he had to save up his abilities until he absolutely needed them, meaning he simply could not predict arbitrary happenings if he wanted his major predictions to be so helpful. Alista decided to continue down the same path and began lessons with him three times a week for two hours each. At first, it was torturous, making her feel like a failure and draining her of energy. Eventually, though, in her fourth year, she began to have short bursts of images when she required them, like glimpses of her next Quidditch match or a test she had in Ancient Runes the next day. These efforts sometimes made her faint from the effort, but after a bit of rest and continuous practice, she was able to get longer strands that were hardly blurry. Damascus then told her to try and produce a vision for something important that was coming up, but only if it was something she truly wanted. He told her to focus on that and nothing else and left it at that. Warily, Lissa began to only think of her upcoming Quidditch match against Slytherin, who they had already lost to once in the season. After many days of grumbling off by herself and small snippets of the game, she found herself sitting atop her broom and looking out over the Pitch. And then it came.
She was sitting in the same spot and heard the announcer blasting about the Snakes lead, 130 – 45. She slammed her fist into her broom, gritting her teeth as the Slytherin keeper tossed the Quaffle to a low-flying Chaser. About this time, she noticed a scrawny second year perched on his broom, looking uncomfortable as he glanced around furtively.
”Maybe they’d be doing better if their Seeker hadn’t gotten bitten by that Kelpie in Care of Magical Creatures!”
And then the vision was whisked away, but Alista did not fall (she’d taken precaution and tied herself to the broom). Instead, she laughed loudly, whooping and taking a few victory laps around the Pitch before remembering her vision and shooting off to the edge of the Lake. She saw the Gryffindor Seeker shuffling haphazardly along, laughing with his friends as they pushed each other around playfully. She zoomed to the ground, abandoning her broom as she ran across the grass calling his name. He stopped, puzzled, and waved his friends off as he sauntered towards her, obviously expecting something important. And it was. For just at that moment, another of the boys toppled into the lake and was instantly grabbed by a Kelpie who had been waiting for his opportunity. The others screamed, drawing their wands and cursing the sea-creature until it recoiled into the sea, but the damage was done. The boy was rushed to the Infirmary, and the Seeker just raised an eyebrow at her, mouth agape. Inwardly, Lissa smiled, but on the outside, she just ran back to her broom, taking off and cheering as she rocketed through the air.
Damascus was pleased, and Alista still continues her lessons with him, hoping to one day be able to use her power to help the Aurors. She has also begun to study DADA extensively, in order to prepare herself for her career, although Herbology and Potions have not been forgotten. She is always hopeful that she will find something, anything, that could help her save her grandparents, but as of late, the prospect looks unlikely. She doesn’t let it upset her too much, however: she’s still the positive, smiling girl she’s always been, perhaps with a bit more ‘insight’.[/ul]
